So it's Halloween Weekend. Finally! Happy that my first Halloween as a member of the working world falls on a Saturday- so I can partake in the festivities guilt free! Last night the roommates and I made hot apple cider, carved pumpkins, and watched The Orphan (which was TERRIFYING) I haven't been this excited about Halloween in a while... Let's see...

Seeing Dead Man's Bones tonight at The Echo. So excited! Going to dress up in my halloween costume which is, appropriately, a skeleton. Apparently I am still 5 years old. Yay.

So. I realized I never gave my asher roth/ kid cudi/ b.o.b concert experience the attention it rightfully deserves. ie: its own extensive blog post. So here it is 3 months later. I was reminded to do so after finding these pics on facebook- courtesy of Asher Roth's friend and permanent wing man, Brain Bangley, and thought they were pretty cool. Props to him as a photag.

Anyway. The concert was way fun. The Great Hangover Tour- Christina and I drove down to SF (en route to LA, for me) and saw them at the Regency Theatre. I have not experienced that kind of energy at a live show in a while. We of course ended up in the front. Super impresssed with the whole thing. Very successful night. We even met Asher and his crew afterwards. Good Stuff.

... would you go to a marionette show where the house band is a mixture of Ryan Gosling's music project, Dead Man's Bones, and a children's choir dressed in halloween costumes. Only in Los Angeles would you set your alarm for 2am so you could drive to Silverlake, pick up your sister, and head to the Hollywood Forever Cemetery to see Bon Iver perform a sunrise concert in, yes, a cemetery. That's how I spent my weekend in Los Angeles anyway.

So this faux-flu thing leaves me with little else to do than lay in bed and stare at my computer.

My apologies.

For the last month I have been talking about Ryan Gosling's somewhat bizarre music project, Dead Man's Bones. So this Friday I am finally going to see what it's really all about. To add to the strange halloween-werewolf-cemetery themed weirdness, Dead Man's Bones is doing a three week residency at the historic Bob Baker Marionette Theatre in downtown LA. Right, so, add creepy marionettes and a Silverlake childrens choir to the list of bizarre. Anyway. This Friday will be their last show... but weeks previous were met with rave reviews from LA Weekly. Check it out.

Urgent Care

Ok, so I don't necessarily have swine flu. But. I did drive myself to Urgent Care in Marina Del Rey today, the same urgent care I went to so many years ago when I got like deathly ill while visiting friends... Tests came up negative for flu / swine flu but apparently that does not mean i DON'T have it... just means the terrible 'nasal swab' they made me endure didn't catch anything. So I was basically told to act like i DO have it. ie, can't go to work, must quarantine myself, and lay in bed for three days. Ughhhhh.

I went to the Museum of Contemporary Art in Downtown LA not long ago to see the Robert Frank exhibition of his work from The Americans. Great book. Anyway. I am going to be taking a course through MOCA and the UCLA extension program inspired by his work. The first of six sessions will be held at MOCA where we will tour the exhibit (again, I guess). The following weeks will then be devoted to creating work inspired by his. EXCITING. I hope it turns out to be as awesome as it sounds... Oh and dad, you'll be pleased to hear that I did in fact read the article about him in the New Yorker :)

Word is the Lil Wayne documentary, which premiered at Sundance this past Saturday, was a hit. I am dying to see it. dying. Here's a particularly hilarious excerpt from a review of its premiere,

Long Weekend.

The weather these last two days has been beautiful. A nice surprise in the middle of January- to actually see the SUN, what a concept... Took full advantage of it over my long weekend. Shoutout to MLK.

On Sunday enjoyed a nice brunch at Cremant, a cute little cafe/restaurant in Madrona. Next, visited the Henry Art Gallery where I caught the last day of Richard Misrach's exhibit, On the Beach. Very cool, massive prints, fun to see especially because of the photography course I'm taking this winter. After the museum, like the true Seattleite who flocks to the outdoors at the first sign of sun, went for a walk around Greenlake. Seattle was out in full, Northface from head-to-toe, force and it was nice to see.

Today enjoyed a day off from school (making this week a one-day-of-class week due to my sweet schedule). Got some work done on the thesis, a point of major conflict in recent weeks and many, many weeks to come. Sat at the Blue Dog Kitchen, my favorite cafe on the Ave, for a solid 3 hours. Oh, I've also been turned onto the show Friday Night Lights and am now fully obsessed. There. A long overdue update of my outrageously mundane life.

I saw this commercial on TV the other night and thought it was hilarious. Hilarious propaganda.

It's funny because I think a majority of these things would only occur to someone (me?) under the influence of alcohol. not marijuana. While the use of either substance is not particularly great, alcohol in my book has far greater consequences than smoking.

It's all so backwards. Sigh.

Over the winter break I had tickets to go see Blue Scholars and Common Market. They were supposed to play three consecutive nights but the WINTER BLAST prohibited them from doing so. All three shows cancelled. Very upsetting at the time- we were prepared to walk ourselves to Capital Hill to see it. I guess they were feeling the cabin fever as much as the rest of us because they made this over the course of those snowbound days,

Photo Project#1: Performative Act.

I am taking a Basic Photo course this quarter and to appease my mother and perhaps for the enjoyment of others, I am going to post my projects- along with a description of the assignment- as they come along.

Assignment: Photograph three activities (images) where subjects perform for the camera, where their actions tell a kind of story. This was about 'performing for the camera' and was used to get us working with things like aperture and shutter speed for the first time.

Everything I had hoped and expected it would be. Brilliant.

Also worth mentioning, I got so excited that this was already in Seattle theatres that I rushed downtown to catch the next show. No one willing to make the effort with me, I proudly saw a 3:15 matinee by. my. self.
Leo and Kate back together again is more a religious experience for me than anything else, so it seemed most appropriate that I first take it all in with no distraction. Now I can proceed to see it 10 more times, maybe even with friends...

I just purchased TLC- Crazy Sexy Cool, circa 1994, on iTunes.
I would of course prefer it on cassette tape but I guess we must change with the times.
If this CD doesn't sum up my childhood, I don't know what does.
Dad, I have a fond memory of trying to convince you to let me buy Seventeen magazine as, like, an 8 year old because TLC was on the cover, and I wanted to put the pictures on my wall. You eventually gave in. Many thanks.

This movie was great. I picked it up pretty randomly while browsing Scarecrow Video. It's cover mentioned a couple of film festival awards, as well as a reference to the French New Wave- a film movement from the 50s and 60s that I spent 20 pages talking about for a class while in Amsterdam. It was emotional, innovative in its style, smart, and full of life/ beautiful young people. I thought the film's use of light was particularly striking as well.

Let's all go to Oslo.
